Research-seminar on: "Social work methods and techniques in the area of services for children and families"
Malosco, July 6 (evening) - 9 (lunchtime), 2005

Fondazione ZancanSocial work is not indifferent to the actual changes, to the increasing complexity of social problems, to the ethical, cultural, organisational and political contradictions that are affecting services and professions.

Old and new individual and collective problems force social workers to pursue not only goals oriented to support and reparation, but also goals of promotion of local communities and activation of social and organisational resources, and also goals of collaboration among different subjects - not only professionals.

There are many challenges: to act with low resources, to understand new kind of needs, to invent innovative solutions, to be aware of the necessity of helping people and organisation to move forward.
Nowadays it seems that social workers are experimenting positive interventions in different context but these experiences are quite unknown: the risk is that they remain a resource for narrow groups of professionals decelerating the process of development of the social work profession itself.

Goal of the seminar

The goal of the research seminar is to analyse, using a scientific approach, the professional work of social workers from amethodological point of view, giving value to the experimentation of new ways of working to the search for effective solutions.
The seminar will start with some common considerations of the participants that will focus on their working methods and techniques: these ones will be discussed and compared. The limit of a research seminar force to restrict the topic analysed by participants. For this reason we decide to focus on families with children.
The professional work in this sector covers many interventions. We would be interested in considering those interventions dedicated to families in difficulties (socio-economic deprovation, maltreatment, abuse…) but also interventions of support and promotion of families that are facing "normal" difficulties (young children with both working parents, family isolation, parental difficulties, centres for families…) or families actively involved in caring (for example, foster care - also daily foster care, self-help group…).
These interventions have in common the consideration, already mentioned in the Italian laws, that families with young children are subjects that must be protected, supported and accompanied but also sensitised to be protagonist of their lives and communities in which they live.

The comparison that we aim to develop is focused on the methodological process of social work followed with families in order to develop a comparison among methods and results, arriving to develop some theories about the interventions used for different kinds of problems/needs. The comparison will be enlarged to social workers from abroad.
The expected results are not recognition of experiences but the construction of different profiles of professional social work in the field of service of families, specifying phases, implementation conditions, results, appropriate instruments for reaching effective results. The seminar will be a process that starts from cases or projects that will be the basis for reflecting and discussing.

Participants

People invited to the seminar are social workers that have practical and/or research experience on the themes above mentioned. Participants are invited to present a written contribution of 4-5 pages) that:

1.    describes a case of intervention with families (with children), or a group of similar cases, or a project implemented in the field of promotion, support… of families;
2.    makes explicit phases and methodological instruments used (from the analysis of the problme, to the plan, to the evaluation);
3.    comments on methodological aspects, pointing out critical points.

As already said above, subjects could refer to families with difficulties (families with multi-problems, situation of maltreatment, abuse, immigrant families with children…), or families who need support because are foster families or committed in caring children, or families that are in difficulties due to the "normal" events of life.

The seminar will be in italian language with help in translation, if necessary.
